#TALES OF ZESTIRIA SOREY THEME SERIES#
Now comes Xillia 2, the place where the series decisively takes a turn for the dark. For Milla, a statement about how more important than having power, it's having something to protect that truly gives you purpose.
For Jude, a story about how the will to push forward is what drives men to greatness No one is given their calling, they have to find it. By the end, both the teenage boy and the god of all spirits are standing side-by-side as equals. Both character share the same story, but one builds up, with Jude finding out what he wants to do with his life, finding a bigger place in the world for himself, and one is broken down, with Milla sistematically losing everything, from her firm beliefs, to the use of her legs, her identity, and finally her very physical form. The other, a woman created for single purpose, whose main struggle is learning and earning her place in the world, while changing her perspective towards humans, while everything she knows and believes is either torn away from, or is a lie. While Symphonia dealt with how memes spread, Abyss shows us how a meme starts.ĭespite being the most differently executed game narrative wise, Xillia can also be seen as the most conformist, being at it's core not one, but two coming of age stories, one for the young medical student torn between his studies, and the greater calling to make a real difference in the world. It's not as uplifting and doesn't have a ending as satisfactory as Symphonia, but it's still undoubtely a positive story, with the main thematical conclusion being the replica beating the original. While Symphonia was a plot about society, and the little ways each of us contributes to it, be it through societal expectations, like the Chosen (each one representing different outcomes, one that performs according to these expectations, and one that rebels against them), or through the memetic spread of an idea, be it a good one, like a world united, or a bad one, like a world divided, Abyss is a darker, more intimate trek about the self and how each of us deals with the outside stimulus that makes us who we are. An anachronistic plot about cloning in a world of swords and magic, used to show the growth of a character over the expectations of society, and of his creators over him. It's a very cyberpunk reflection, in a world as far from cyberpunk as possible. Culture, upbringing, friends and parents all shape a person far more than their DNA, and the story takes a very japanese and more literal examination of that theme through the Replica plot point. Tales of The Abyss has the struggle of humanity to understand what individuality and self really mean, and how humans are more than just the outer shells that biologically compose them.
When Lloyd is told he has to sacrifice something, he'll just push against it until he finds a different way. It's a story about characters constantly confronting the supposedly impossible, and always finding solutions, to build Lloyd's "ideal world". It's a game about confronting norms and necessary evils to find a better and more equal solution. The main theme is around preconceptions, racism and xenophobia. I'll start out with Tales of Symphonia, since it has the simplest themes, and is by far the most simplistic and idealistic game of the modern 3D era of the series. There will be spoilers for Symphonia, Abyss, Xillia 1/2 and Zestiria. I will also be ignoring most of the religious themes of these games since that would take much more time to talk about. No, it isn't academy-level writing, and I apologize for that. I want to start out by saying that I'll be very reductive here, breaking down the main themes of SOME of the modern Tales games to a more condensed state.
